“Better a near by neighbour than a far away brother”
-An Arab saying
Just as i have one foot in Europe , i have another foot in the middle east, considering where to place both feet and i have broke down my disciplined yogi ways and have decided to subscribe to Netflix, one free month offer, expiring 24.12.
The neighbor and i have gone through Netflix and sought out something we both liked to watch, i said no to violence and politics, and so we ended up watching “Grace and Frankie” starring Jane Fonda and Lili Tomlin, giants , i explained to the young neighbour, who look amazing for their age or any age…i have always appreciated Jane Fonda’s dramatic abilities, have watched several films of hers, and had her exercise video that gathered dust on the shelf..Lili Tomlin is an icon comedian, i loved her playing the gospel choir singer in “Nashville” and she always manages to make me laugh and think at the same time.
“This time of year, Jane Fonda is usually at the Cannes Film Festival, but this year she is working back home. After a screening of the first two episodes of the second season of Netflix’s Grace and Frankie, part of a new Tribeca Talks series at the SVA Theater for the Tribeca Film Festival, the iconic stars Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin took the stage for a panel moderated by Gayle King. Chatting, bickering, japing, with one another, the stars fielded questions on aging, women in the industry, careers, and lovers. “This is how it is on the set,” they assured a packed audience. In the fall, Fonda was nominated for a Golden Globe for her role as an aging actress in Youth. She said, she’s just happy to be working. With Grace and Frankie now filming their third season, she and Tomlin will be working for a long time.
The episodes screened featured the two women coping with Martin Sheen’s character having a heart attack on the eve of his wedding to Sam Waterston’s character. To catch you up, the two men had been married to Grace and Frankie, so they’re all family, so to speak. Episode two features a pre-op wedding officiated by none other than Frankie. Speaking about how they got this going, show runners came and asked them how they felt about working with each other. After all, they co-starred in 9 to 5. There was no script. They wrote the script after. “We live the scripts,” said Tomlin. “If it says we get friendly, we get friendly.”
“I didn’t get it at first,” said Jane. “Yeah, she thought Grace was going to be an aging Barbarella,” quipped Lily, and so it went for the next hour. “Grace could not have ended up with someone as perfect as what she needed as Frankie,” said Jane. “What about age?” asked Gayle King (61). Jane said, “Those of us who have celebrity should just say our age. I’m 78,” to which Lily countered, “I’m 76. We’re on the dark side of 70. You get to play love scenes. I don’t get to have a love scene. We get to have DVO.” Huh, what’s that? “Deep Vaginal Orgasm,” she replied.”
The plot is not so credible, we agreed, two elderly women married for decades , discover their husbands are homosexual lovers who wish to marry each other..
The scenery: Malibu beach is very attractive, the acting is good but i did find the plot not so credible.
The neighbor and i discussed the plot after a lasagnia dinner i had made, which might lead to a cooking corner 0n my youtube channel, and easily agreed that it is not a very likely possibility and then my neighbour/coach had wondered why i dont write scripts for comedies? why indeed ?
I like the character played by Lili Tomlin , the hippy , much more than the serious stiff and fit Jane Fonda , however their combination is delightful.
This is the first day and i already scanned what i liked to see; The documentary section was a bit disappointing; not enough environment and human behaviour but there were two or three documentaries promoting vegetarian eating showing the suffering of animals which i decided to skip , however important to watch, i just can’t, excuse the pun, stomach the pain at the moment.
I found the documentary on the life coach Robbins interesting, we just saw the beginning but were already wondering whether the client Robbins is dealing with is an actor…then there were documentaries on women murderers , the Austrian who locked his daughter away in the cellar, the American student accused of murdering her flat mate and two Michael Moores that caught our attention ; time will tell just how much.
So enough watching for one evening, is this the end of reading?!
Reading allows a mellow comforting feeling flowing through the veins and nerves that is not the same as the adrenaline flow of watching a dramatised event.
