an Hungarian Tulip in Tel Aviv

Hungry after a visit to burocracy I stopped at “Tulip”-an Hungarian restaurant .

I speak a few words in Hungarian and enjoy the old world atmosphere..I order the business menu:vegeterian bean soup full of Paprika and flavor. The lemonade was too sweet..I listen to Hungarian talk..

I tell the owner that Tulips originate in Turkey. The ottoman empire had occupied Hungary .Yes I tell him,I know,my Hungarian speaking  grandmother explained the origin of crescent moon cookies..we both learn something..

The bread comes with an Hungarian cheese. Small portion  but full of  flavor!

kosonom sepp!(“Thank you”)

Here is a poem

The wall paper

gold  flowers on black background

my grandmother’s ghost

she never spent money

eating outside

her small refuge place,

she made schnitzel from Vienna

and pasteries from Slovakia

with some paprika

she roared

but outside she smiled

with charm

hiding everything

beneath a layer

of  old world

Austro Hungarian

manners.
